Snapshots on the North Cmapus--Military Training Underway

In the midsummer time, people who come to GDUFS are welcomed by the shady trees, the suffusing aroma of the plants, as well as its unique moist air. They walk down the school paths, look up at the tall trees beside them, and are immersed into the beautiful flowers. People who visit GDUFS will be guided to the hot playground by a sea of resounding voices. They are the lovely ‘green’ freshman. People will appreciate their straight postures, be impressed by their vigor and energy, and be stirred by their insistence and bravery. Playground, canteen and school paths, each snapshots makes up their first most beautiful memories of school life. Military training is underway.

A Burning Sun, An even Playground

Turning to the playground, there are numerous boys running laps: fifth, tenth, fifteenth, and even more. Their eyes are gradually blurred by the increasing heat and sweat. They are fighting against the sun: in other words, they are fighting against themselves. Maybe one more step is extremely difficult for them, maybe they are already tired out, but in order to guard the glory of the grappling squad, they will never give up so easily. On the other site, rows of students pounce upon the ground in apple-pie order. Such simple action - pounce and pause - is actually not simple at all, which is polished by their constant efforts and endless pains. ‘We are real men!’, said those confirmed boys.

When it comes to punishments, ‘Greenmen’ complain a lot and learn a lot. ‘One person ill, and the whole take medicine’ is a buzzword among the navy formation armed with guns. ‘Keep arms straight, have a deep squat, and move together.’ is one of their deeply rooted disciplines. Even though it appears to be a drudgery for them, they have grown much more than expected. Pretending not to be like that, they admire their instructors secretly and sincerely in every interaction, whether positive or not.

Via panoramic aerial shots, we can not only appreciate fantastic sights around the campus, but also take a closer look at those ‘Greenmen’. Every time the drone flies over the playground, ‘Greenmen’ are instructed to pay attention to the recording. Girls usually blush in front of the camera, while boys act more bold and naughty, sometimes making a pose, and sometimes grimacing. In a word, our campus is colorfully decorated by their innocent laughter.

‘In the future, when I ramble around the playground, passing every tree and every corner, the sounds of instructing, singing and clapping will still fill the ear.’

Canteens Captured, Doctors Occupied

Eventually, a green dragon of students capture all the canteens by the time they’re free for supper. Everywhere we look is green. Among them, some ‘Greenmen’ are too exhausted to have an appetite, while others are eager to kill their hunger because of tiredness; some walk towards their dormitory in haste, while others are still so energetic to chat with their partners in a jovial mood. It is mostly about something interesting, but there are also some complaints about standing in the sun. ‘I’ m very exhausted. I got hungry only an hour or so after breakfast and I suffered with my teeth clenched the rest of the time’

On the day of the medical test, the out-patient department was also packed with ‘Greenmen’. Suddenly a group of weak girls caught our journalists’ eyes. ‘If possible, we would come back soon rather than have a day-off because of illness’. Definitely, when they think back in the future, it’s more about regret of not fighting together with partners than happiness of having a rest. We wish them a splendid youth without any regrets.

‘I wish I could have time to talk with each of you, I wish I could become one part of you and stay with you all the time. However, all good things will come to the end. In my mind, we are always one. I hope you can remember my smile forever and maintain a good mood at every moment.’ said the third battalion commander, whose words warmed everyone. Just a few days later, a close bond had been formed between those freshmen and their instructors, not only in the strict disciplines of training, also in the sweet interaction of leisure time. Unconsciously, the two-week military training comes to an end. A freshman said, ‘military training runs slowly fast, in that the time of endless training is extremely long but the time of staying with their dear instructors is quite short. They are not willing to say goodbye.’

From the first greeting ‘Hello’ ‘Nice to meet you’ to today’s company, students become gradually familiar with their ‘comrades’: she who hands her bottle to you when your bottle is empty, he who does you a favor when you are sick; the flower blooming in the burning sun, the soft voice from the radio station. Everything is changing, which colors the training life with warmness.

Additionally, physical tiredness cannot weaken their enthusiasm about colorful school life. Everyday after training, ‘Greenmen’ rushed to interview without having dinner. Sweat could not dim their eyes, tiredness could not impair their confident smile.

Come on , ‘Greenmen’, your brand new life has begun. After having your first class at university, what you got is not only the suntanned complexion. A fifteen-day military training will be an unforgettable memory in your whole life.

Those green flowers blooming in the military training will add more vigor and vitality to GDUFS, a place where our dream begins.
