GDUFS Student Wins First Prize in “FLTRP CUP” English Writing Contest

On December 13^th, the award ceremony of the “FLTRP CUP” English Writing Contest of 2014 was held in Beijing at which LIU Guiqin, Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education, and PENG Long, President of Beijing Foreign Studies University, were presented. Ninety-five (95) contestants who came from mainland China universities, as well as students from Macao and Taiwan, attended the finals.  ZHANG Han, student from the Faculty of English Language and Culture of GDUFS, won the first prize, making GDUFS the single university awarded first prize among universities in Guangdong Province.

Hosted by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) and co-organized by the National Foreign Language Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education and the National Advisory Committee on Teaching English Language to Majors in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, this contest is the largest and the top national English writing contest for college students in China.

The content of finals includes two types of writing: narration and argumentation. With the topic of “A Letter on Father’s Day”, the narration requires contestants either to write their understandings about the love between father and children on the basis of their own experiences, or to create moving stories with imagination. While the argumentation asks for students to elaborate their own opinion about the hot topic of the Spring Festival Gala, aiming at testing their comprehension and critical ability on current social affairs. With his solid language ability, extensive international knowledge, innovative thoughts, as well as his rigorous critical thinking skills and profound artistic appreciation, ZHANG Han elaborated his own ideas smoothly, receiving a high rating from judges. Finally, he stood out and won the first prize.

It is reported that ZHANG Han attended the national finals on behalf of Guangdong Province after he had won the first prize in the qualification trials of Guangdong Division on Nov.1^st.
