At 10:00 in the morning, on November 29th, with the successful conclusion of the China International Friendship Cities Conference, the voluntary service for “Guangzhou Award and Two International Conferences” came to an end. The outstanding performances of around 350 volunteers from GDUFS were praised by both leaders and delegates becoming one of the highlights of the events.

Dressed in blue uniforms, volunteers busied themselves with all kinds of activities and the basic guarantee works of the convention center. At 7:00 in the early morning, they went to work full of enthusiasm and expectations. At night, they took shuttle buses back to school, worn out but delighted. Ordinary as their posts might seem, they exerted themselves to contribute to the conferences.

HE Xuehan, from Faculty of English Language and Culture, was a member of hotel service team. She participated in this voluntary service with immense zeal though she was a graduating student. On the social network she posted that: “Thanks for offering me the great opportunity of being a receptionist. Through helping guests from both home and abroad, I was fully aware of my shortcomings and improved myself. It was not until I communicated with the hotel staff did I realize the significance and difficulties of the service-sector jobs. I began to hold people from all walks of life in reverence. It was very meaningful and I learned a lot.”

80 percent of volunteers in the domestic and foreign guest reception teams are from GDUFS. Apart from being in charge of the schedules of national or international delegations, they were supposed to be prepared to deal with any possible emergencies. For example, when flights were late, they would contact the traffic management team and reschedule. If a delegate felt ill, they would get in touch with the medical personnel for timely treatment.

HUANG Zhenzhen was a domestic guest receptionist. On November 27th, she was extremely busy because most of the delegates chose to arrive on that day. At about 4 o’clock in the morning, she picked up a guest at the Baiyun Airport and then helped him with check-in. Soon after, she and her colleague met another delegate at the airport at 11 a.m. At 4 o’clock in the afternoon, she was leaving for the airport again to do the reception work for the third time. The hectic schedules made her exhausted, but she said that she was really happy to serve all the delegates and help to raise the international profile of Guangzhou.
