On December 15th, the 7th AEON Cup National Interpretation Competition sponsored by The Chinese Translation Association and Beijing International Studies University was successfully held. The second-year graduate students LI Jing and WANG Qiaowen took part in the Japanese simultaneous interpretation competition and the consecutive interpretation competition on behalf of our school, and they won the third prize and honorable mention respectively.
The items of the interpretation competition consisted of Japanese, French, German, Russian and Korean, or five languages in total. Twenty-eight contestants from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, Beijing International Studies University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and others took part in the competition. The quarterfinal was carried out in the morning and the six contestants who stood out in the quarterfinals could be promoted into the final match. There’s an atmosphere of great tension during the competition. Every contestant showed his or her Japanese ability in only 10 minutes. Ultimately, LI Jing was promoted to the final match of the Japanese simultaneous interpretation match.
After a brief halftime, the final match started in the afternoon. LI Jing was the first contestant. She performed calmly and steadily, as well as demonstrating her clear pronunciation abilities. She finished the informative interpretation of 2 articles with succinct language use. Finally, she won the third prize in the final match. Another contestant WANG Qiaowen won the honorable mention of the consecutive interpretation match, gaining great honors for the Faculty of Japanese language and Culture of GDUFS.
All the judges of this competition were authorized and senior experts in the Japanese interpretation field. Senior interpreters were invited to the spot, including Professor Tsukamoto Keiichi from Jilin University, Deputy Secretary BAI Liwen from CWCIE, experienced expert Cai Yuansen, Japanese Minister FU Ying from China Radio International, Director of the Research Institute, YANG Chengshu from Fu Ren University, Director QIU Pengming from China Central Television and others.
So far, the national college multilingual interpretation competition has been held 7 times. Every year, since the 2nd competition, the Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture took active part in the competition, and they placed great emphasis on this big event. Instructors for the group participating in the competition consisted of CHEN Yan, DU Fan, LIU Xianfei, and LIU Yan from the advanced interpretation teaching and research division. Before the competition, they devoted themselves to the contestants providing specialized training and demonstrating the utmost care. Dean ZHANG Xiuqiang from the Japanese Department indicated that an online selection for participants in the first round was added into the competition system this year. Thus, the competition became more intense and it was not easy for contestants to achieve a spot on the finalist team.
