On the afternoon of March 20, a delegation from Suratthani Rajabhat University (SRU), Thailand, led by its President Dr. Wattana Rattanaphom, visited Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS). Vice President Shen Minghao received the guests at the VIP Hall of the Administration Building of the Baiyun Mountain Campus. The two sides held discussions on deepening educational collaboration, cultural exchange, and academic research, culminating in the signing of an inter-university Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Highlights from the Meeting
Vice President Shen extended a warm welcome to Dr. Wattana’s first visit and introduced GDUFS’s educational philosophy, international characteristics, and achievements in Thai language education. He emphasized that GDUFS, as an important base in South China for international talent cultivation and studies of foreign languages and cultures, global economic governance, foreign-related rule of law, and international dissemination of Chinese culture, has made remarkable strides in academic research and international education.
Established in 1970, GDUFS’s Thai Department employs a unique “Thai + English + Micro-discipline” teaching model and was designated as a national first-class undergraduate program in 2019. Vice President Shen highlighted that 2025 marks both the 50th anniversary of Sino-Thai diplomatic relations and GDUFS’s 60th founding anniversary. The signing of the MOU with SRU will propel bilateral collaboration in talent cultivation, curriculum development, joint research, and faculty exchanges, fostering a new chapter in Sino-Thai educational cooperation.
Dr. Wattana praised GDUFS’s Thai Department for its pivotal role in promoting Thai language and culture and strengthening bilateral people-to-people ties. As one of Thailand’s top five universities in the southern region, SRU has cultivated numerous talents driving local economic development. He expressed hope that the MOU would leverage both institutions’ strengths in humanities and social sciences, adhering to principles of complementary advantages and resource sharing, to establish a new paradigm for international higher education collaboration.

MOU Exchange Ceremony
Following the meeting, representatives from both universities participated in the MOU signing ceremony. Personnel from the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, the Faculty of Southeast Asian Studies, and the Institute for International Education attended the event.
