President Zhong Weihe and Vice President Fang Fanquan held a warm reception for Mr. Suvanajata and his staff. Mr. Suvanajata has been dedicated to the mutual exchanges between China and Thailand and has offered great support for the development of our teaching and research in Thai language. On behalf of GDUFS, President Zhong expressed gratitude to Mr. Suvanajata for his great efforts and delivered concerns about recent floods in Bangkok. In return, Mr. Suvanajata shared his appreciation for GDUFS' support of projects run by the Thai Consulate and declared that GDUFS is like a second home for him.

In fact, GDUFS and the Thai people have enjoyed a profound friendship. Earlier on December 4th, the Thai monarch's eighty-fourth birthday, teachers and students from the Thai Department at GDUFS with the help of community members planted 84 trees to celebrate the monarch's birthday. This symbolized the everlasting friendship between the Chinese and Thai people. Photographs on this event were awarded the top price on the photo display in commemoration of the monarch's birthday. Mr. Suvanajata informed us that their consulate is attempting to apply for Scholarships bestowed from the Thai Foreign Ministry so as to provide financial aid to Thai majors at GDUFS who are going to study in Thailand. He guaranteed that Thailand is open to the Chinese.

Later on, Mr. Suvanajata held a lecture on Thai culture. He started with the recent floods in Bangkok. He showed the audience photos of smiling people in Bangkok to illustrate Thai optimism. He described the Thai people in six words: kind-hearted, generous, trustful, open-minded, wise and creative. The Thai people are pious Buddhists, he told us, and so they trust others and share with others. They are willing to learn from others while they develop their own unique culture. He cited two evidences for their creativity: The First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama has a dress created by a Thai designer; and the Thai movie "First Love" swept through Asia and earned much applause from movie-goers. Then Mr. Suvanajata gave a thorough introduction on Thai culture in all aspects, from cuisine, festive traditions, economics and politics. He even recommended scenic spots to the students. His lecture attracted many students and was well received.
