On the evening of June 6th, Guangzhou was struck by a burst of heavy rain which lasted nearly 3 hours, causing severe flooding of the streets in the low-lying area as well as northern dormitory quarters of the North Campus. Action was taken at once. The university leadership immediately directed the relief operation, coordinated contingency plans and appeased affected students. The optimism and fraternity of students in front of the pouring rain showed their deep comradeship.

Roommates were cleaning the dorm together

Among the 30 submerged dormitories during the rain, those on the first floor of No.7, No.8 and No.9 male dormitory buildings were the most severe ones. “We were surprised by the rate of the rising water when it flowed in (the dorm). Then we had to pack real quickly as time was running out.” Student Gao living in the No.7 dormitory building said that students were helpful when facing the heavy rain, and roommates in the dorm helped pack for absentees. “We didn’t lose too much thanks to the timely notice of our counselor and dorm supervisors around 9:10 pm.”

Room 115 of the No.9 dorm building has been thoroughly cleaned already. With senior students living there, it only had one student in the dorm when the water flowed in. Thanks to the reminding of the dorm supervisor, he quickly shut the door, packed the clothes and tried his best to move all his roommates’ stuff to high places. “A lot of dorms had no students in last night. There were four students in that dorm who directly headed to the supervisor for keys to help move stuff in other dorms.” It was because of the effort of several remaining students, the loss of all people was not so big.

A picture of Laughing fearlessly through the rain of a dorm in No.7 dorm building was a hit on the Internet last night, which was a little relief to the panic-stricken students. “The water was rising to the bed and there were things out of our strength. So we just stopped to take a couple of photos instead. We never thought it would be hot like that, but memorable the pictures really were.” Student ZENG from No.11 dorm building said they were free of immersion because of their high-lying position, but they were not free of business and offered a hand to help as much as they could.

According to arrangement, students affected mostly spent their night in the Ganxun Building last night, and those who lived outside of campus could also be reimbursed. After the night, students are appealing for maturer contingency plans, timelier warning as well as popularized disaster-dealing education.

On the next morning, the university leadership went to the disaster scene to know more about the condition and had an on-site meeting. SUI Guangjun, Chairman of University Board, expressed his solicitude to the working staff and hailed their timely reaction as well as hard work. He also made requests to the following disposition including to reimburse affected students and to get the school life back to normal as soon as possible.
