Peruvian Ambassador in China Disseminated Peruvian Spanish in GDUFS

Mr. Sui firstly welcomed Mr. Gutitirrez on behalf of the school. He mentioned that a good cooperative relationship had been established between GDUFS and two Peruvian campuses. He also pointed out that the Confucius Institute at the Catholic University of Saint Mary, Arequipa Peru, which was built by the two campuses, has succeeded in many communicative projects.

GDUFS has had a Spanish major since 1965, and with today's active trades between Guangdong Province and the South America, Spanish majors from GDUFS should be able to easily find a descent job in the market after graduation. Mr. Sui then expressed his hope that there would be more cooperation between GDUFS and campuses in Peru.

Mr. Gonzalo expressed his thanks for the campus' welcome and he affirmed the increasingly tight cooperation between GDUFS and his country. He talked about the interesting phenomenon that in recent years, more and more Chinese are learning Spanish, while in Peru; people are becoming more interested in learning Chinese. Mr. Gonzalo encouraged Chinese students to make good use of Peru's language resources where Spanish is spoken by Peruvians and he also cited an example that Peruvian teachers who taught in the Shijiazhuang, Heibei Province were very popular among students there. He then emphasized that the Embassy of Peru would support the construction of Spanish majors at GDUFS, and hoped his visit here will be the bridge that will lead to future communication between both sides.

Mr. Gonzalo presented GDUFS with a group of Peruvian movies, and later a series of Peruvian paintings which will be displayed in a photography exhibition that will be organized on this campus.

Then, Mr. Gonzalo gave his lecture based on El Castellano del Peru at the Lecture Hall and his humorous language won him storms of applause. The lecture was hosted by Mr. Fang Fanquan, and it included several parts, like "the evolution of Spanish" and "Spanish and America". During the lecture, Mr. Gonzalo gave answers to questions like: "What is Spanish?"; "How is Peruvian Spanish different from other Spanish?"; and, "Which kind of Spanish is the authentic one?" He mentioned that Spanish originated from Latin and the language changed over time. He also pointed out that although changes were not obvious between the two adjacent eras, there are significant differences between today's Spanish and the Spanish from distant past, which are reflected in the areas of phonetics, grammar and vocabulary. Then he introduced some examples of Latin and the changes of Spanish since its advent on the American continent.

When talking about Peruvian Spanish, Mr. Gonzalo referred to its phonetics, grammar and vocabulary, and he introduced some exotic words. For example, he mentioned that the Spanish word "jengibre" was originated from Cantonese "jiang". The audience's laughter filled the hall as Mr. Gonzalo showed his vivid PPT and gave fantastic explanations. At the end of the lecture, Mr. Gonzalo emphasized that as long as a language could exercise its representative functions, it is a legitimate system of expression.

In the end, the audience said farewell to Mr. Gonzalo and then watched a Peruvian movie.
