On the evening of 8th May, the 14th Sudirman Cup, also called BWF World Mixed Team Badminton Championship, was unveiled in Dongguan City. GDUFS’s translator team was composed of 34 graduates and postgraduates from different institutes. They provided follow-up translation and interpretation services, including 12 languages: English, Japanese, Korean, German, French, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai, Italian, Bahasa Indonesia and Vietnamese. GDUFS’s translation team undertook all the translation tasks at the preparation stage until the opening of the competition.
The Sirduman Cup, also named World Mixed Team Badminton Championship, was originally unveiled in 1989. It is one of the three most important international badminton competitions and takes place every two years. Together with the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup, they represent the highest levels of badminton. The 2015 Sirduman Cup was held in Dongguan, Guangdong Province.
GDUFS’s translation team
The translation tasks included the interpretation of a press conference as well as working as escort interpreters for Badminton World Federation officials, competition candidates and foreign media officials.
GDUFS’s translation team arrived in Dongguan on the afternoon of the 8th and immediately got down to work on the first task; to provide interpretation services for the opening ceremony dinner. Twenty-two GDUFS students served the participants including the officials of the Badminton World Federation, the General Administration of Sport, the government of Guangdong Province and the government of Gongguan (Dongguan?)as well as the competition candidates from foreign countries.

On the 9th of May, 7 interpreters from 3 institutes provided consecutive interpreting services on English, Japanese, Korean and Bahasa Indonesia. Jun ZHONG from the reception team provided escort interpreting services for Thomas Lund, who is the Secretary General of the World Badminton Federation. In addition, another 4 GDUFS students were at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport to greet each team. Other student workers also completed their jobs brilliantly.

With the unveiling of the Sudirman Cup on the 10th of May, the translation and interpretation tasks increased day-by-day. But GDUFS’s translation team plunked for the Sudirman Cup.
