On the afternoon of September 22, Mr. Lajos OLÁH, Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly, led a delegation to visit Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS). Shi Youqi, Party Secretary of GDUFS, met with the guests in the VIP Hall of the Administration Building on the Baiyun Mountain Campus. The two sides held in-depth discussions on educational cooperation, talent cultivation, and China-Hungary cultural exchanges.

Highlight from the Meeting

During the meeting, Shi Youqi introduced the university’s history, the development of its Hungarian Language major, and cooperation with Hungarian institutions. He emphasized that as the university with the widest range of foreign language majors in South China, GDUFS has always adhered to the educational orientation of “meeting national priorities, aligning with future trends, supporting the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and leveraging GDUFS’s strengths.” With strong faculty resources, the university is committed to cultivating high-caliber, globally minded, interdisciplinary talents. In 2023, GDUFS established the Hungarian Language major, officially enrolling students in 2024. This is the first undergraduate program in the Hungarian language in South China. It has established partnerships with Hungarian universities such as the University of Pécs and the University of Szeged. He noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Hungary in 1949, bilateral relations have continued to deepen. In May 2024, ties were elevated to an all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership for the new era, with frequent high-level exchanges and growing political trust. GDUFS will shoulder its mission as a higher education institution, enhance the academic quality of the program, and ensure high standard of talent cultivation, contributing to cultural exchange and mutual learning between the two countries. He expressed hope to further expand practical and fruitful cooperation with Hungarian universities in areas such as student exchange, faculty visits, and joint research.

Mr. Oláh highly commended GDUFS for its efforts in international education and cultivating Hungarian language professionals. He noted that cooperation between the two countries in the fields of economy, politics, and education are of great importance, and expressed hope that more Hungarian universities could establish partnerships with GDUFS in the future. Together, they could nurture more high-quality, bilingual, and cross-culturally competent talents. In addition, he expressed his willingness to provide GDUFS students with more opportunities to study, work, and develop in Hungary, bringing fresh momentum to Hungary-China friendship and regional development.
