The Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Visits Guangdong University of Foreign Studies

On the morning of September 18, Miguel R. Bautista, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and Chief of the Government Affairs Department of Member States, visited Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS). Shi Youqi, President of GDUFS met with guests in the VIP Room of the Administration Building of Baiyunshan Campus. The two sides exchanged views on establishing friendly cooperative relations and developing a platform for cooperation and exchange.

Shi Youqi welcomed Miguel’s visit and gave a detailed introduction to the internationalization education features, talent training, and foreign exchanges and cooperation of GDUFS. He said that GDUFS is a reputable university with distinctive international features adhering to open education and actively carries out substantive cooperation with foreign (overseas) universities, scientific research institutions, internationalization organizations, and enterprises.

In 2016, GDUFS took the lead in establishing the School of International Governance Innovation in China, launched the “International Governance Innovation Graduate Program”, and cooperated with the University of Maryland to cultivate outstanding students. It has now become a base for cultivating internationalization governance talents. Shi Youqi thanked Miguel for his care and support in cultivating talents in international organizations at GDUFS. He said that Miguel’s visit to GDUFS to participate in the “United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Organization Month” series of activities has stimulated the interest and enthusiasm of the students in GDUFS to learn and participate in international organizations. In the future, we will further deepen exchanges and cooperation with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, jointly prepare to build an Asia-Pacific Knowledge Dissemination Talent Training Center, and strive to achieve greater achievements in innovative talent cultivation in internationalization governance.

Miguel expressed his gratitude to GDUFS for the welcome and confirmed its contribution to the cultivation of international governance professionals. He emphasized that talents and platforms are important forces in promoting innovation in internationalization governance. In the future, he expressed his wish to work with GDUFS to explore internationalization talent training and internationalization platform building, use the wisdom of Chinese philosophy to jointly respond to new internationalization environments and challenges, promote the new transformation of China’s national governance capacity system, enhance the development vitality of developing countries, and reshape a bright future that meets the needs and well-being of people.

After the meeting, Shi Youqi and Miguel jointly unveiled the opening ceremony of the “United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Organization Month”. Representatives from theOffice of International Exchange and Cooperation and the School of Internationalization Governance Innovation attended the meeting.
