【Excellent Foreign Teacher】BAE YUNKYUNG: Teaching is a Profession Which Requires Originality

Baiyun Mountain Campus, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, September 30^th, 2022：Bae Yunkyung, a Korean teacher of Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures, mainly teaches two courses "Korean Writing (1-2)"and "Korean Audio-Visual Speaking (3-4)". Her courses are rich in content and novel in form, which garners the trust and affection from students and ranks her among the top teachers in teaching evaluations every year. At the same time, she has participated in the compilation of many textbooks (e.g: Elementary Korean (Part1), Elementary Korean (Part2), Korean Reading (Part 1), Korean Reading (Part2), Intermediate Korean Writing). She has also received many awards and certificates of honor for her outstanding teaching.

Bae Yunkyung majored in education when she was an undergraduate. However, due to her love for Chinese since childhood, she minored in Chinese and later went to Beijing Normal University to study for a master's degree. During this period, she accidentally came into contact with Korean language education. She has dreamed of being a Korean language teacher ever since. "It is very meaningful for me to teach my mother tongue to foreigners," Bae said. After that, Bae returned to Korea to pursue a doctorate in Korean language education. Bae never forgot her study life in China, so she determined to come to China to realize her dream of being a Korean teacher. Finally, she became a foreign teacher at GDUFS.

As a foreign teacher who has a deep love for China, Bae has been engaged in teaching at GDUFS for more than ten years. She is very impressed with the improvements of the teaching environment at GDUFS over the past ten years. Nowadays, all classrooms are equipped with adequate teaching equipment, which is of great convenience for teachers. When teaching, Bae actively uses devices and online teaching platforms to assist in her teaching and improve her teaching quality. At the same time, she also actively communicates with students through Wechat to give teaching feedback and strengthen the connection between teacher and student. "The most important thing in teaching is to teach students in accordance with their aptitude, so teaching is also a profession which requires originality," Bae said. In order to improve the quality of teaching, Bae often combines current events in class and adjusts teaching materials according to the students' level and topics of interest. In order to innovate on her own teaching methods, she often attends various teaching seminars at home and abroad to improve her philosophy towards education and improve her teaching level. Then she integrates what she has learned with her courses.

In addition to teaching, Bae Yunkyung also actively participated in social services and successfully completed a number of translation tasks. Among them, her most memorable task was to record a multilingual radio broadcast on a sightseeing bus in Guangzhou with other foreign teachers. If you take a tour bus in Guangzhou, you can still hear her broadcasts in Korean. When the epidemic was raging, she also participated in the translation of a COVID-19 warning poster commissioned by the Publicity Department of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, which allowed her to make her own contribution to the epidemic prevention.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and South Korea. Bae feels very honored to be awarded the title of Excellent Overseas Teacher in this year of special significance. She will continue to stay true to her original intention, maintain her high level enthusiasm, continue to care for students, and do her best to contribute both to the school and society.
