August 27th is the day for GDUFS’s new members to move into the campus. Well-designed banners with welcoming words are hung on either side of the campus road, above the Xiangsi River and on the facades of the dorms. Inheriting excellent practices of last year’s welcome preparations, this year a new online registration system specifically for freshmen was introduced, which provides new members with a convenient method to register. After finishing the registration online, they can get their dorm keys directly in front of the dorm buildings. The new system helps freshmen avoid the inconvenience of time-consuming queues to hand in personal files. In such cases, they are well cared for with a warm welcome.

Innovation Work Achieved Convenient Move-in

In the morning, officials of the related departments supervised the progress of the welcome day, both on the North Campus and the South Campus. Officials included LIU Haichun, the Vice President of GDUFS together with officials of the Student Union, Communist Youth League of GDUFS and Logistics Department. They inquired in detail how the welcome work was carried out and demonstrated a friendly concern for freshmen and volunteers.

It’s said that the progress of freshmen registration has been positively facilitated by the Students Union and Logistics Department. Before the arrival, many freshmen had already used the Mobile GDUFS App to finish personal information collection. Others who hadn’t only need to scan a code to finish their collection in front of their dorms after arrival. Then they could move into the dorms with convenience—a demonstration of the concept of people-oriented operation. LIU Haichun complimented the work done by different faculties. He stated that each faculty should conduct the welcome work innovatively according to its own features to ensure that the activity went smoothly.

XIE Yingdong, the Dean of Student Union, expressed in an interview that the new online registration system dispersed the freshmen to their own dorms, instead of standing in lines for a long time, which happened last year. It has enhanced the effectiveness of the work, maintained the order of the campus and also ensured students’ security. What’s more, the participation of freshmen counselors, volunteer students and teachers offered assistance to the welcome work. They have already communicated with freshmen during the summer vacation through WeChat, QQ and so on, providing them with basic information of GDUFS, different majors and the implementation of the credit system. “It’s a marvelous service offering freshmen assistance” stated LIU.

New dorm guardrails

In order to guarantee a smooth welcome day, the university put great emphasis on its work, preparing thoroughly in every aspect. LIU Si, the Dean of the Logistics Department, explained that to give new members a comfortable living environment and a good start to their university lives, the Logistics Department has done a lot in terms of students’ study, food and living conditions. There are nearly 1500 dorms for freshmen on both campuses, where guardrails have been equipped for safety and walls repainted. In addition, maintenance of multimedia equipment in teaching buildings has been performed by a new property management company. And there will be several more food varieties in campus canteens for students’ greater food experience.

Poverty-stricken Students Received Financial Aid on the Very First Day

At 11 a.m., principals of the University Student Affairs Office offered financial aid to 20 poverty-stricken students who are in a difficult situation caused by disasters or other reasons, promising them a happy start to their college lives. During the summer vacation, the university has confirmed their difficult situations online through the freshman registration information system. One of the students said:" I felt so warm and will study hard to repay the university and society."

It is reported that in order to help poverty-stricken students better, the university continued to set up a special access to ensure students in poor families that meet certain eligibility requirements can finish registration successfully.

Volunteers Provided Considerate Service for Every Freshman

Although the sudden showers on the evening of 26th interrupted some of the volunteer’s preparatory work, their passion never waned: There were students who kept on putting up tents, carrying water and materials all around the campus. At night, LIU Jun checked the preparatory work with dim light and showers. Some students at freshmen registry of School of Business didn’t stop working all night, for guarding the materials and receiving freshmen who arrived at midnight.

Welcoming Slogan of SEIB

With warm hearts and smiley faces, volunteers wearing clothes with faculty characteristics covered the whole campus. The poetic poster of the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture attracted great attention; the slogan of the School of English for International Business lit up people’s eyes: ‘Elephants aren’t elephants without noses, birds aren’t birds without wings, SEIB isn’t SEIB without you’; School of Interpreting and Translation set up Freshmen Parents Exchange Group for the first time in order to strengthen communication between parents and the SITS. Besides, for students’ convenience, a consultation service was integrated into the Student Service Center to better solve the problems.

The enthusiasm of the volunteers filtered all the way through to the freshmen. CHEN, who came from Jiangxi Province, felt the warmth from GDUFS once he arrived at the railway station. Led by a warm-hearted volunteer, CHEN was given plenty of information about his major and courses and got the overview of Guangzhou along the way. Another freshman GAO, the only French Language major student enrolled from Hunan Province, said: “The campus is tranquil with lots of trees, which enhances the atmosphere of learning. I hope I can enrich myself through four years study in Guangdong.” Freshmen were impressed by the new registration procedure and enthusiastic service group.
