On April 16th 2016, a China-Indonesia Cultural Exchange Activity was held at the Consulate General of Indonesia in Guangzhou. Teachers and students from the School of Indonesian Studies at GDUFS took part in the activity so as to experience the unique Indonesian culture and enhance the friendship between Chinese and Indonesian people.

At the outset, Ms. RatuSilvy Gayatri, the Consul General for Indonesia in Guangzhou, extended a heartfelt welcome to our teachers and students from the School of Indonesian Studies. She hoped friendship and cultural understanding between the two countries would be deepened through this activity.
A second year Indonesian major student from GDUFS, LI Jianwen, and an Indonesian international student served as hosts to this cultural exchange activity, where they spoke in Indonesian throughout. In the cuisine exchange session, native Indonesian teacher Veronica, who was also an amazing cook, demonstrated the cooking techniques for traditional Indonesian food, Soto Ayam, while our GDUFS students made Guangzhou special cuisines — Dry-fried beef hor fun and Spicy roast beef — and invited other Indonesian friends to grab a bite. Later, the Consul General invited the teachers and students from GDUFS for lunch, where they enjoyed authentic Indonesian cuisine. While having lunch, all participants, as well as staff members, had a good talk about eating habits, tourism, history and the culture of China and Indonesia.

Next came the cultural exchange session. Guangwai students introduced two representative symbols of Chinese culture—Chinese knot and martial arts. In their presentation of Chinese knot, which has long been praised for its richness in meaning, the students not only introduced its origin and symbolic meanings of reunion, peace and happiness, but also the process to weave the intricate Chinese knot. After that, Guangwai students gave an extraordinary performance of martial arts – displaying the characteristics of swiftness, exactness and firmness. Their performance received an enthusiastic applause from the audience.

In the later singing session, Indonesian major ZHANG Sikai sang a classic Java song Solo River and a joyous popular song dekat di hati. The remarkable power of his performance drove the audience to all sing together.
After the performances, Ms. RatuSilvy Gayatri presented a souvenir to the School of Indonesian Studies at GDUFS.
