After taking several exams, I finally reach the end of this semester which marks my first semester at GDUFS. How time flies! I have studied here for nearly four months. During this period of time, I have experienced and learned a lot.
Since I did not major in English before, I was not quite accustomed to attending classes taught in English, which seemed so strange to me. Nor did I understand what syntax or transformational-generative grammar was at the very beginning. I still remember how nervous I was when I took my first consecutive interpreting class. My hands were almost sweating from the start to the end and my mind turned into a blank sheet every time the teacher asked one of us to interpret. I remember how embarrassed I was when I made my first presentation about a topic that I have never heard before and I couldn't even answer the question put forward by the teacher. I also remember those days when I was burdened with so much homework that sometimes I had no spare time to have supper. But fortunately, I finally got used to the new environment and I gradually got to know some important concepts about translation studies and linguistics. Everything began to go smoothly.
The front door of GDUFS
Over the past four months, I often found myself at a loss: It seemed that I was quite busy everyday, but I didn't know what I had learned. However, at the end of this semester, I realized that I did, in fact, make progress even though I couldn't feel it. I now have a general idea about the discipline I'm learning, I have become more serious about how to write papers and I know how to take notes to do interpretation. This realization caused me to recall the words of my previous teacher, "As a matter of fact, you shouldn't complain about learning nothing, it's just that you don't know how to use what you have learned." So this time, I have already made preparation to make a brand new start in the year of 2013!
