November 29th--Mr. Marco Benedetti, the Director General of Directorate General for Interpretation at the European Commission (also known as SCIC), together with Mr. Paul Brennan, China's correspondent of DG Interpretation, lectured on Interpreting for the European Institutions: Multilingualism in Action. The lecture was held by the Party Propaganda Department and organized by the School of Interpreting and Translation Studies.

Mr. Benedetti began by giving a brief introduction about SCIC. He said that as the biggest interpreting group, SCIC provides interpreting service for 27 member countries in 23 languages with over 800 interpreters from different countries for 60 to 70 meetings per day. Hence, multilingualism has become an important feature in SCIC since 1958.

At the lecture, Mr. Benedetti mentioned that the distinctive feature of multilingualism and the wide range of topics involved has set a high standard for the interpreters. Mr. Brennan furthered this point by introducing the specific qualities that a good interpreter requires. He believes that a good interpreter should be an all-rounder as well as a specialist because "the contents are always tricky to grab", which means "he/she should know something about everything while knowing everything about something". Other than that, a good interpreter should not only be quick-witted and intellectually curious, but more importantly, be equipped with the ability of bridging the language gap. The interpreter must also strike a balance between being faithful to the speaker and to the listeners at the same time.

Mr. Benedetti pointed out that as EU and China are enjoying unprecedented levels of communication, China has also become one of the most important working languages of SCIC. SCIC has already set up programs for European interpreter trainees with Chinese at the University of International Business and Economics and Shanghai International Studies University. GDUFS is striving for the cooperation with UN and EU to establish our Conference Interpreting Course with an International Certificate.
