Olympic Silver Medalist Luo Qian Awarded the Chancellor's Medal

Sep 19th --On the afternoon of September 16th, GDUFS held a celebration for Luo Qian, the silver medalist of Synchronized Swimming at the London Olympics. The event was held in the International Conference Hall on the north campus. Those who accompanied Luo as she came back to her alma mater included Hu Jia, men's diving gold medalist at the Athens Olympics, some of the Chinese diving teammembers, and Luo's teammate, Chen Xiaojun who is also a member of the Chinese synchronized swimming team.

President Zhong Weihe, Vice Secretary of the Party Lu Jinghui, and some school leaders attended this celebration which was hosted by Vice Secretary Lu.

President Zhong delivered a speech at the celebration. He congratulated Luo Qian on her excellent performance and on achieving outstanding results at the London Olympics. He also expressed his gratitude for the teachers and students who have been supporting Luo for years. He mentioned that Luo's courageous striving was a vivid representation of the spirit of the Olympics-"Higher, Faster and Stronger", was the slogan of London Olympics-"Inspire A Generation". He hopes that the spirit and action of Luo will inspire teachers and students at GDUFS and will be planted into the depth of their hearts. Finally, he hopes that Luo will continue exerting herself and constantly transcending herself. He shared his wish that Luo's future will be even more brilliant.

Afterwards, the attendants watched a video of Luo's Olympic journey made by GDUFS. The video showed her perfect performance in the London Olympics , her campus life at GDUFS and many messages of best wishes from her teachers and classmates.

 

 

Vice Secretary Lu hosted the celebration

 

After the video, Yu Shengming, Vice Dean from the Faculty of English Language and Culture spoke at the meeting as Luo's teacher and also the representative of all teachers. He said that FELC applied the "One-to-One" teaching mode to Luo Qian. When Luo was receiving her training outside the school, the teachers conducted distance teaching with her through the Internet. Besides, the school guaranteed Luo's study by credit recognition.

Chen Xiaojun, Luo's teammate and member of the Chinese synchronized swim team, affectionately called Luo Qian "Sister Qian". She said that Luo is very friendly and gentle. She not only is a good example for the whole team with her hard work and excellent skills, but also she is an intimate sister of the team in daily life.

As a 4th year student in FELC, Luo said though she had achieved good results in 2008 and 2012, she wanted to maintain a "spongy attitude" while on campus. As she looked back on her days of studying in FELC, she expressed her gratitude to FELC for arranging special teachers for her so that she could make progress in her studies. She also thanked her classmates for constantly encouraging her in the big FELC family.

When talking about synchronized swimming, Luo said that this sport challenges the pinnacle of human achievement. They trained in the water for 10 or more hours everyday, which was very dull and boring. However, she believes in the saying "One minute of the audience, ten years of practice". Only through practice can an athlete succeed. Finally, she shared her desire to devote more to the undertaking of sports while enriching academic knowledge.

At the end of the celebration, President Zhong awarded Luo the Chancellor's Medal for her great devotion to the nation. In return, Luo reciprocated with an autographed team shirt.
