School of Interpreting and Translation Studies

 

Introduction

 

The School of Interpreting and Translation Studies at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) was established in May of the year 2005. It is located on the university’s North Campus surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the White Cloud Mountains, renowned for being the cradle of individuals of great merit.

 

To cater to the social, economic, cultural, and educational development of Guangdong Province in South China, all the university’s resources for interpreting and translation teaching and research, including their highly qualified translation teachers, have been integrated for training high-level professionals in the School of Interpreting and Translation Studies in accordance with the principles of modern higher education and coordinated socio-economic development. The school now boasts a highly qualified teaching staff with abundant experience in both the theory and practice of interpreting and translation, with the ultimate goal of becoming a first-rate training and education institution of professionals highly skilled in interpreting and    translation for practice both at home and abroad.

 

The school presently has the Department of Interpreting, the Department of Translation Studies, the Research Centre for Interpreting and Translation Studies, the Training Centre for Advanced Interpreters and Translators, and the National Resources Centre for Translation Studies.

 

 

Responsibilities and Requirements:

 

The school will follow the tenets of the University’s motto – “moral integrity, outstanding performance, and cross-cultural learning” – with the aim of cultivating mainly four categories of talented individuals in accordance with national socio-economic developments. The four categories of talented individuals include: 1. Ph.D. students in Translation Studies; 2. MA students in Translation Studies (specifically in areas of Conference Interpreting, Interpreting Studies, Translation Theory, Commercial Translation Studies, Legal Translation Studies, Media Translation Studies and Literature Translation Studies); 3. BA students in Translation, Undergraduates pursuing a second bachelor degree in translation practice; 4. Advanced professional interpreters and translators in non-degree programmes.

 

Requirements:

 

·         At least a Master’s degree in Translation Studies, or Conference Interpreting, or Chinese Studies from a leading overseas’ institute

·         At least two or three years’ teaching experience or equivalent working experience in a higher learning institution

·         Proficiency in the Chinese language

·         Ability to proof-read or edit translation or writing work in English
