Introduction

 

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) is one of the prestigious universities in Canton, China which specializes in international studies and educates professionals for international business and management.

 

The study of lexicography in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) started in the 1970s, and the representative figure is Professor Huang Jianhua, the former president of GDUFS and one of the pioneers in Modern Theoretical Lexicography in China. In the early 1980s, lexicography became the key study area in the former Institute of International Languages and Cultures (IILC). In the mid-1990s, the Center for Lexicography was established subordinate to IILC. From then on, Professor Huang Jianhua, Chen Chuxiang and Zhang Yihua obtained significant achievements in their academic researches, which have exercised great influence upon contemporary lexicography in China. With the development of lexicographical studies and the growth of the academic team, the Center for Lexicographical Studies became an independent research institution under the University in the year 2001.

 

At present, lexicographical study in GDUFS is one of the three well-established research areas in the National Key Research Center for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and concurrently appraised and approved to be the National Key Discipline. The Center for Lexicographical Studies functions as the seat of Chinalex Bilingual Committee.

 

Responsibilities and Requirements:

 

The Center is looking to appoint a researcher with the status of university lecturer/associate professor/professor to assist Prof. Zhang Yihua in the development of an English dictionary for Chinese users, with Chinese glosses.

 

The ideal candidate will be a native speaker of English with a PhD or equivalent in English or languages and experience of dictionary editing, text editing, or alternatively English teaching with an emphasis on vocabulary, corpus work, and/or collocations.

 

Main Duties:

1)      Edit English language dictionary text to ensure it is idiomatic and correct.

2)      Validate English corpus-derived examples to ensure that they are not only authentic but also represent typical usage of the sense being defined.

3)      Advise Prof. Zhang and his colleagues on questions of English usage.

4)      Teach a course in English lexicography or linguistics.
