The Reappearance of Pingyao

Pingyao is a county in central Shanxi province, People's Republic of China. It lies about 715 kilometers from Beijing and 80 kilometers from the provincial capital, Taiyuan. It is also regarded as the birthplace of modern banking system of China. During the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was a financial centre of China. Chinese banks were originally called "Piao Hao". Richangsheng is the first "Piao Hao" offering financial services in town, and China. Therefore, it became the ancestor of all Chinese Banks.

The overlook of Pingyao Ancient City

Its history dates back 2,700 years, and is one of the best preserved ancient cities in the known world. It is still inhabited by 50,000 residents and is renowned for its well-preserved ancient city wall, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pingyao Ancient City is an outstanding example of city for Chinese Han nationality. The city has maintained all its features and showing an unusual complete picture for changes and developments of society, culture, economy and religion."

The performance of Reappearance of Pingyao

In order to make the county better known by the public, a commercial performance was deviced to highlight its past honor. On 18th Febuarary 2013, the first situational, self-engaged performance named Reappearance of Pingyao made its debut in Pingyao County, Shanxi Province. The performance was unfolded with a whole new pattern, breaking the conventional routine that the audience was supposed to enjoy the show off stage. Instead, the audience are for the first time rendered the opportunity to walk in the newly constructed spectacular mega construction where the replicated Pingyao Ancient City was built in it.

The architects and sponsors of this program aimed to make the recurrence of Pingyao City in the late Qing Dynasty, when the city was at its heyday. The show turned out to revolutionize the normal way of performance by providing the audience with a multi-sensory experience. People themselves in the performance are either the audience or the performers, because they can touch, see and hear everything about Ancient Pingyao City that has been gradually annihilated in the annal of history.
