You may have never heard about the book I'm going to review, but certainly you have heard about its author, George Orwell, who wrote the two famous books, Animal Farm and 1984. I don't want to talk about these two books; I prefer to introduce you to his first novel, Down and Out in Paris and London.
This novel begins by introducing us to a British literary intellectual who lives in Paris. Unfortunately, one day an Italian stole all of his money. He was left with nothing except 47 francs. From then on, he went through a series of bad luck and had to work for peanuts. For example, after a few days' starvation, he found a job as a dishwasher and had to work for 15 hours a day doing grueling labor. When he managed to go back to London, his condition was even worse and he couldn't find job. Finally he had to beg for food while drifting from place to place.
In this novel, you can learn many shocking but true realities about poor people and their miserable life. When it was published, the book swept over Britain and France like wildfire.
George Orwell is not only an observer, but he is also an experiencer. He quit his wellpaying job, took off his decent clothes, hid his Eton accent and went deep into the life of those people who are suffering at the bottom of society. He experienced the sufferings of poor people from the heart; he recorded their miserable lives with his pen; he showed us the shocking life of the poor through this book that makes us think about others and recall our humanity and sympathy.
Down and Out in Paris and London is one of his books that shows us how great George Orwell is.
