Business Skills Blossom during Shenzhen Internship

August 26 - Each summer, thousands of college students from around the country flock to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing as interns, and they have many interesting stories to tell about their experiences outside the ivory tower of education. I am a GDUFS Russian major and would like to share with you my experiences as an intern for Mindray, a Shenzhen-based manufacturer of biomedical equipment that has extensive dealings with Russian companies.

An internship is an important aspect of a university graduate's resume because employers now place much emphasis on work experience. I was fortunate to join Mindray, one of China's top biomed manufacturers, for a six-week summer internship program as an assistant in the department for international sales of laboratory products, where I could use my English and Russian skills, as well as apply the knowledge I have gained at the university.

During the first four weeks, I attended training classes and lectures that covered various aspects of the company. For a freshman like me working in a new company, the thing of first and foremost importance is to become acquainted with the company's general operations, its culture, development, structure, organization and products, which are all essential knowledge for sales representatives. As interns we were offered guidance in sales, marketing and international trade by experts.

I gradually became familiar with all respects of the company and was eventually assigned duties in completing international sales, translating documents from English to Russian, managing e-mail, researching distributors from Central Asian countries.

After completing my training period, I gave a bilingual presentation, profiling the company in both English and Russian, which helped develop my confidence in public speaking. I also attended weekly sales meetings and was able to observe business procedure.

I learned that, rather than asking others how to do things, a freshman should show initiative and engage actively in company affairs. I studied on my own all aspects of the business procedures and focused on the process of international export. In the first days of my internship I met some difficulty in work and was perplexed. So every day after work I consulted my mentor Alexander. After patiently listening to my daily report, he would point out where I should improve and give me useful advice on developing my personal career.

My internship at Mindray was both challenging and rewarding, and provided me with the opportunity to become part of the exciting world of sales, marketing and international trade. I worked directly with a group of passionate and talented people who taught me anything that I wanted to learn about the industry. Each day was different! Through my internship, I gained hands-on experience in a growing industry, experience that will be extremely valuable in my future career.

The internship also gave me the chance to apply what I have learned at university and to explore and clarify my major and career goals with professional guidance. From my perspective, this fruitful experience could potentially be worth as much as my degree. This six-week internship has solidified the idea that international sales is something I want to pursue as a career.

This practical experience gave me the confidence to make the jump from the ivory tower of education to the glass and steel skyscraper of commerce.
