On March 1st, the Confucius Institute at Sapporo University was the center for promoting Chinese language and Chinese culture in Japan's Hokkaido region. Held at the Kushiro National College of Technology, the first lecture on Chinese language and Chinese culture attracted company managers, and general staff as well as the faculty and students of the college. The local newspaper, News-Kushiro, also published a special report.

The lecture was jointly presented by President ZHANG Weixiong and Chinese president PAN Jiemin over two days. The lecture in the morning consisted of an introductory course to the Chinese language and in the afternoon an experiential lesson on Chinese tea culture, Chinese Kung Fu as well as an introduction to Chinese world heritage were presented.
In just two days, the attendees had learned every-day expressions related to self-introductions, how to ask the way and about shopping. Too, they had experienced the effect of Chinese Qigong;learning how to keep fit and about the charm of Chinese tea culture. Many students said they had benefited much from the lectures

Since last year, the Confucius Institute at Sapporo University had actively communicated with the Kushiro Japan-China Friendship Association in preparation for the establishment of the Confucius Institute. The first lecture on Chinese language and Chinese culture was one of the initial tasks. THE CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE AT SAPPORO UNIVERSITY will continue to do further research of the learning demand for Chinese language and Chinese culture in the Hokkaido region, gradually holding more lectures and establishing the best opening hours and schedule for the Institute's classrooms.
