Two GDUFS Scholars Attend Century Seminar About World War I in Austria

From July 3rd to 5th 2014, during the 100th anniversary of the eruption of World War I, the University of Vienna sponsored an international seminar in Vienna, the capital of Austria. The theme of the seminar was “World War I’s Influences on Contemporary China’s Historical Proceeding.” Forty-four scholars from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and many other nations took part in the seminar and were divided into six groups concerning; “Modernization”, “Foreign Policy”, “Economic Development”, “Relations Between Japan and China”, “Reform” and “Intelligent Exploitation” all to discuss and exchange personal ideas.

Professor LIU Wei from the Jiusan Society and the Institute of Economics and Business, and JIAN Xiaoqing from School of Cisco Informatics, Vice Chairman of the China Party for Public Interest at GDUFS, as well as the Vice President of the Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese in GDUFS, were invited to attend the meeting and presented their theories. LIU Wei read a statement noting his theory of “A shortage of fixed capital, monetary deflation and decline of China’s total output between 1914 and 1918, based on the research of Supply Restrictive Economy.” JIAN Xiaoqing presented his paper on the “Elementary exploration of influences on Guangdong-Hong Kong railway placed by World War I.” JIAN also answered a question raised by other scholars and gained recognition by people concerned.

The University of Vienna was founded in 1365 A.D. and has the longest historical standing in Austria. It is also one of the oldest universities in Europe. In addition, nine Nobel Prize winners come from this university. The whole university is filled with a great cultural atmosphere. What’s more, the University of Vienna is the biggest university in Austria, and even in Europe, containing eighty thousand students. To-date the University of Vienna has eight departments with this seminar being directed by the Department of Sinology. During the seminar, the sponsor organized participants to visit the first museum in Vienna—the Annals of War Museum.
