Stories with Our Foreign Teachers

Time:October 13, 2018  Author:  Editor:  Source:   Photo:

Do you know that long-term foreign teachers make up almost 10% of all permanent teachers at GDUFS? That is, one in every 10 teachers is a foreigner. When different cultures and different personalities meet, our stories begin.

Chapter 1. My foreign Teacher is Amazing

@A Chun TheSchool of Finance

Simon, a handsome guy with man bun, writes perfect Chinese. That’s not all. He also plays the guitar and posts videos of himself playing the guitar on his WeChat moments all the time. As his students, we’re lucky enough to hear him play the guitar in class. With such a humorous and talented teacher like him, what more can we ask for?

In some ways, Simon is more Chinese than Chinese people. He loves to practice calligraphy; speaks fluent Chinese; writes traditional Chinese characters; creates his own poems; plays the guitar; sings and composes!

Henry Wijaya - a foreign teacher with a delicate lifestyle and lots of talents - can always find a way to bring music and painting into class. His lessons are so expressive and passionate—we always enjoy them! He performs with us and teaches us Indonesian musical instruments even though he doesn’t know how to speak Chinese.

Chapter 2. My Foreign Teacher Is Strict

@GOU Za The School of English for International Business

Elaine, a “fake” foreigner who has lived in China for almost 30 years, is very strict with students. She’s been dubbed as “the terminator” and “GPA killer”. But the saying “talented students are trained by strict teachers” is never a lie. It is under her strict teaching that we learn more.

@Ceci The Cisco School of Informatics

Duncan Potter (transliteration) is famous for his strict attendance policy. He takes a photo of everyone in the first class, and checks them every day during roll call.

Chapter 3. My Foreign Teacher Is So Sweet

@Fiona The School of English Education

David, a vegetarian, has a strangely big belly and we’ve never figured out the reason why. He has lots of requirements but never criticizes. There was one time when he asked us to write a book journal and we didn’t do well. He just pointed out our problems and then gave us high scores. What a kind teacher!

@GAO Hehe The School of Economics and Trade

Josh is so warm and considerate towards students. He tells us to “Take care of yourselves” at night and to protect ourselves.

@binshao TheSchool of Journalism and Communication

Ada, a teacher of advertisingEnglish this semester, requires students to leave their cellphones in the front of the room. Once she found out that four other classmates and I secretly kept our cellphones. Fearing to embarrass us, she patiently pointed it out and talked with us after class. She’s super nice!

Chapter 4. My Foreign Teacher Is So Funny

@GAO Hehe The School of Economics and Trade

Our foreign teacher in freshman year, Richard, went the classroom early every day. He uses cute typeface to make display board for the class and teaches great. Also, everyone has a name tag. He left GDUFS last year and we miss him so much.

@Beca The Cambodian Department

We took our foreign teacher to eat kebab after the welcome party for freshmen. There, we played truth or dare. We asked, “Do you have a girlfriend?” He answered, “Yes.” We said, “Wow! We’ve never seen her!” Then he said, “The books in the library are all my girlfriends.”

Four words describe my teacher well: gentle, knowledgeable, easy-going and kind.

Chapter 5. I’m So Happy to Be with You

@ΦωτεινήThe Greek Department

Last year, it was the birthday of our foreign teacher not long after the semester began. So, we secretly bought him a birthday cake and took it to the 4thTeaching Building before class began. At class, we sang birthday song for him and put a birthday hat on his head.

@Yoga The Serbian Department

We went to our foreign teacher’s home and cooked Serbian food together for the Food Festival. Our teacher offered us recipes and kitchen and even taught us how to cook. We went to Guangdong Museum, celebrated Girls’ Day, ate hotpot and “Wonderful Times” together.

We believe that there are more interesting and unforgettable stories between GDUFSers and foreign teachers, which will warm the heart and enrich the life in GDUFS.
