In Portuguese, the word legal has two meanings: legal, lawful; cool, fine. And what the senior students from the Portuguese Department experienced is really legal. They had the most special internship that a class could have and earned the praise with their hard work.

Representatives at the meeting

The head of China’s top court, Zhou Qiang, met with senior law officials attending a forum of China and Portuguese-speaking countries on March 25th in Guangzhou. Fifteen students from the forth year of the Portuguese Department worked as volunteer translators for the delegates. On April 10th, the Faculty of European Languages and Cultures received a thank-you note from the Higher People's Court of Guangdong Province, recognizing the volunteers’ hard work and contribution to the meeting.

After the meeting, the WeChat Moments of GDUFSers exploded with the news. The Dean of the Portuguese Department YANG Jing said that preparing for a meeting of such high level required lots of time and efforts. And there were many uncertainties and emergencies during the process, which made it even more challenging. One of the most outstanding students, XIAO Ying dealt with the uncertainty successfully with her excellent Portuguese skills. The representatives from Guinea-Bissau arrived in Guangdong on March 22nd. However, the translator that was supposed to show the representatives around Baomo Garden could not come due to some unexpected problems. It was at almost 11pm that XIAO got the news that she would take the place of the translator and be responsible for the visit tomorrow. Although being a little shocked, her rhythm was not disrupted, and she started preparing for the materials right after knowing the news. Even with only a few hours’ preparation, she finished the task perfectly.

The great work of senior students from the Portuguese Department has shown their competence and confidence in the language. The experience, along with the thank-you note, will definitely be their best graduation present!
