Koh Chang: Island of Adventure

Koh Chang, the elephant-shaped island on the Gulf of Thailand's eastern seaboard, 310 km from Bangkok, attracted me not for what it was famous for, even though it offers visitors more than 6 very long beaches with powdery and glittering sand. The real lure was what came afterwards.

There’s a giant variety of flora and fauna both on this mysterious island. More than 60 bird species are resident to Koh Chang, including everything from tiny Sunbirds – very similar to Hummingbirds – to Sea Eagles and Hornbills. Besides, a total of 42 types of amphibians and reptiles were spotted, which covers species from King Cobras down to Koh Chang Frog. I saw a couple of weird yet wonderful animals during my time on the island, especially the brightly colored beetles everyday outside the bungalows.

Getting to and from Bangbao Village was definitely an adventure, since the mountain roads were the biggest obstacle. Fortunately, motorbikes were cheap and convenient to rent, and with only 300 baht, I bounced along the bumpy road and headed for this southernmost village. Unbelievable beauty brought the village authentic charm, especially the views from the top of lighthouse at the end of the pier. After taking a walk for the photo opportunities, I strolled back to the souvenir shops, in which some unique Koh Chang T-shirts and seashell souvenirs were sold.

There is no excuse for not trying Thai fruit. Not only is fresh fruit in Koh Chang delicious and nutritious, but also it is a brilliant way to refresh after a day in the sun. One of my favorite fruits, pineapple, could be found everywhere from roadside stands to resort breakfast buffets. This year-round fruit is usually a great partner with papaya in a traditional Thai salad. Another ubiquitous fruit that I strongly recommend is dragon fruit, which is originally from Central America. After a few hours in the fridge, cut it in half and use a spoon to enjoy.

There are more than 5 elephant camps on Koh Chang, where tourists can get really close to the elephants. Different types of treks are available, so the choice is down to where the distance visitors want to travel and in what kind of environment visitors want to see the elephants stay.
