LEI Feng Month: GDUFS’s volunteers on the move

BG: LEI Feng was a soldier in the People's Liberation Army and is a communist legend in China. After his death, LEI was characterized as a selfless and modest person devoted to the Communist Party and the people of China. In 1963, he became the subject of a nationwide posthumous propaganda campaign put forward by Chairman Mao: "Follow the examples of Comrade LEI Feng”. LEI was portrayed as a model citizen, and the masses were encouraged to emulate his selflessness, modesty, and devotion to Mao. After Mao's death, LEI Feng remained a cultural icon representing earnestness and service.

On March 23rd, a monumental activity — “LEI Feng Month: volunteer services on a street” — was held by Youth Volunteer’s Guidance Centerof GDUFS in the Tunnel Playground, South Campus.

Altogether, 15 volunteer associations from different faculties actively participated in the activity and offered voluntary services featuring The Belt and Road Initiative, so as to practice LEI Feng’s spirits and inherit his spiritual heritage, which thoroughly reflects how vivid and vigorous his spirits still are.

LEI Feng’s spirits require people to be willing to lend a hand to those in need and take pleasure in helping people. To respond to this, the stalls on the spot helped students who came and went by offering a variety of volunteer services in many aspects. Take the volunteer association of the College of Art who represented Indonesia for example, whose stall was popular among visitors with people gathered around.According to a person in charge, the College of Art this time made full use of its advantages, which meant they voluntarily painted beautiful portraits for students who visited their stand. Student ZHANG told us, “What LEI Feng did inspired me in my growth and I have always wanted be a big man who treads the path of selflessness like him. Therefore, as an art student, I am pleased to use what I have learned in my major to serve students.” Besides, the volunteer association also creatively put forward a teaching game in which students could learn how to make a LEI Feng clay and mud model, which is intended to expressing students’ admiration and respect for LEI Feng.

Different from activities in past years, this year the Youth Volunteer’s Guidance Center of GDUFS combines volunteer services with nation’s remarkable strategy: “The Belt and Road Initiative”, corresponding with the nation’s latest proposition and this time services target at students rather than residents. Each stall presented and showed the local customs and practices to participants, and just like one of the organizers LUO said “We are hoping to spread the spirits of LEI Feng along the process of constructing the Belt and Road.”

As far as student DAI ,who is a member of the “Care small stuff” volunteer group, is concerned, the work of publicity and propaganda for Chinese “The Belt and Road Initiative” can actually be achieved through these small actions and new ways of spreading relevant knowledge. After this activity, students gained more knowledge of cultures of countries on the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, as well as raised awareness of following the example of LEI Feng in everyday life to help others readily and enthusiastically.

The activity ended in a round of thunderous and heated applause, marking the activity as a great success.
