On the afternoon of December 9th, the 2016 GDUFS Social Practice Performance Report was held in the Multimedia Auditorium of the library on the North Campus. As the ancient saying goes:"Everything must be only done then been understood profoundly "; social practice is playing a more and more important role for students. Therefore, the assembly aims at summarizing and displaying the results of social practice activities carried out in 2016, as well as raising students’ awareness and enthusiasm towards voluntary work.

LIU Haichun, the Vice President of GDUFS, delivered a speech in which he expressed his satisfaction with the achievements and gave some pieces of advice as well as his sincere hope for a brighter future for active GDUFSers.

The thread of the assembly orients over the growth process of a GDUFSer, which can be described as three chapters named “Encounter”, “Growth” and “Distance” with several segments in between.

After an opening introductory video and a brief summary of the fruits that have been achieved in the field of volunteering in 2016, the host announced the start of the display session.

Group Discussion

The “Yingde Service Team” from the School of English Education made a remarkable presentation about the status of their project. Admirably this is the 11th year of their teaching in a small county school. Their perseverance has been acknowledged by GDUFS and the society, as they have successively gained the honorary title of “Excellent performance team in Three Rural Areas” and their advisor won an honorary title last year. The summer service team of school’s student organization shared their story with us, emphasizing the role initiative plays in the process. Then, the vice team leader of the “Spring Project” delivered an enlightening speech, which helped us get a better understanding of this project. Different from the previous projects centered on the development of rural students, the “Spring Project” innovates in changing the target from students to teachers in rural areas. By being dedicated to improving the teaching skills of local teachers, the “Spring Project” can have a good and profound influence on students.

A notable trait is shown through their social practice, which is the passionate quest for science and efficiency. For example, the “Spring Project” team prepared a detailed agenda with different classes and the “Yingde Service Team” created textbooks according to students’ interest and other factors. The common practice is a combination of pre-investigation and pre-survey, adjustment during the process, feedback and reflections afterwards which turns out to create a positive circle. This good practice corresponds with the nation’s call for targeted and precise poverty alleviation.

At the closing part of “Encounter”, three teachers who are in charge of their faculty’s service team came up to the stage and shared their opinions on the Three Rural Areas Activity’s heritage and development. One of them came up with three dimensions to assess whether the service is beneficial, from “What we are capable of doing”, “What we are interested in” and “What do they actually need”. He also pointed out the significance of finding that precise joint point which connects the service we deliver and meets the demands of people there efficiently and benefits them the most.

A brand new chapter was opened by an exciting and amazing singing performance by four students from the College of Art, during which they sang an original song named “Sunshine”. This song represents the shining voluntary spirit of GDUFSers and conveys a warm sentiment to the audience. With an elaborately-made MV playing in the background and the moving and positive lyrics resonating in the hall, let alone with four members performing devotedly, the performance was a huge success and was treated with thunderous applause.

The following part was a presentation given by “Sweet Dew Movement”: an affiliated voluntary project of the Faculty of English Language and Culture. This project cares for adolescents in juvenile detention facilities. By holding various activities, they hope to enrich these juveniles’ lives and lead them back onto the right track. Then, four international conferences participants shared their experience about participating in international events, and the offer receiver LIN also introduced his work in the International Child Care Organization.

The highlight came when the host had a video call with the “West Portion of China Project” member ZHAO Shuqin. Before the video call, a video was played in reference to her life in the western region of China. She described her arduous 19 hours of traveling from the south-east of China to the furthest north-west of China, the beautiful scenery in Sinkiang and most importantly her views on her life choices. She touchingly said that a life that chooses to struggle in the south-east can be splendid, while a life that chooses to take root in the wild north-west and make sacrifices is another kind of wonder. She met many hospitable minority people and she also encountered her beloved one who is a native of Gansu and got married. During the connection through the net, she smiled brightly and warmly, just like a cup of hot Coco in winter that can melt your heart away, indicating her sincere and genuine happiness.
