[Voluntory Organisation] Make Contributions to Society with Knowledge

Traveling thousands of miles is better than reading thousands of books. In the past 50 years, many students of GDUFS have volunteered to go to where they were needed. They accumulated knowledge in practice and improved themselves while offering their services.

It has been learnt that the Go to Rural Areas Program, which takes place during the summer vacation, has a 19-year history, with a total number of 360 000 students going to Guizhou province, Sichuan province, Ningxia province and other western areas, as well as Guangdong province to teach English, do social research, circulate policies and bring culture and arts to the rural areas. In addition, many volunteers have joined in the Western Plan, Three Supports and One Assistance (support agriculture, education and medicine and alleviate poverty) and the program of Postgraduates Support Educational Undertakings.

FENG Zhuoyi, who graduated in 2011, gave up postgraduate recommendation and the opportunity of working in Guangzhou to resolutely go to join the program of supporting the development of Xinjiang Province. When she finished the volunteer work in Kashgar, Xinjiang Province after two years, she once again gave up the chance to go back to the inner land, and chose to be a civil servant in Urumqi, to witness the development of Kashgar.

CHENG Fu'an, a retired staff of GDUFS, was the first president of the Association of Retired Staff. He called for retired staff to help teachers make a move, repair doors and windows, install emergency bells, and talk with retired teachers. During the Asian Games in Guangzhou, the almost-80 year-old CHENG Fu'an held the slogans written with “Volunteers are great” and “Never give up” to encourage volunteers. He even printed the song of the Asian Games with his own money, sang and recited for the volunteers to make them feel spiritually encouraged.

There are numerous volunteers at GDUFS. The Association of Legal Assistance received and dealt with 582 legal consultancies and issued 120 forms of Legal Opinion. Twelves students who major in Spanish went to the forefront of preventing and controlling Ebola in Guangdong Province. They wore protective clothes and gears, assisted the tourists who came from Guinea and other countries where there were severe Ebola epidemics to fill in all kinds of information.

     A kind heart will influence more people. The fire of volunteers at GDUFS will never die. The spirit of volunteers over 50 years remains the same. And the future generations of GDUFS will be dedicated, diligent, and with full enthusiasm, rigorous attitude, provide professional service to society, and write the pride and glory of GDUFS.
