[GDUFS : Past and Present] Embrace the Integration of Learning and Self-improvement

How to utilize the next four years to the fullest? This is a pervasive question of freshmen when they encounter a brand new campus life. Apparently nobody likes a monotonous lifestyle of shuttling back and forth between classroom and dormitory. However, the arrangement of spare time can be rather exhausting, so how can we effectively improve our personal comprehensive competence? Is a part-time job a feasible choice? What if the time-consuming work turns out to be a burden? Well, numerous integrated chances offered by various organizations at GDUFS will suffice to clear the fog.

GDUFS defines as its mission the training of talents which not only specialize in their chosen fields of study, but also own a hands-on creativity and the competence to engage in global competition and cooperation. Yunshan Student Work-study Center perhaps best exemplifies GDUFS's commitment to the pursuit of “All-round education”. The Center witnessed its establishment in September of 2003, and now has become the mainstay of job resources with a stable supply of nearly 2000 jobs. The 30 entities subordinate to Yunshan Center are all founded and run by students from GDUFS, which demonstrates the fulfillment of the motto “integrating education with practice”. The category of entities covers catering, cultural products, gym, digital products, and so on. The days are gone when students had no approaches to finding an applicable way to enrich themselves.

The existing system exposes students to a real market. In each entity, students from different institutes work as a whole to formulate rules and regulations, organize staff training and take care of all the sundry matters. “I appreciate the working experience here a lot. Apart from learning the skills of making beverages which I'm strongly interested in, l also get acquainted with a bunch of friends here,” said a worker from Qi Yun Xuan, a well-received drinks shop at GDUFS. “Sometimes it can be challenging to attend to all the things, but only in this way can I improve the ability of handling difficulties.”

Fascinating though, the salient time conflict between work and study restrain many students from getting a part-time job. Luckily, as these entities cater to GDUFSers’ needs as much as possible, they make it easier for students to find a satisfactory part-time job and reach a work-study balance.

Making money through mastering extra professional skills is awesome, while students also demonstrate great enthusiasm in voluntary work. Every year during the summer vacation, a voluntary teaching group made up of students steps into the rural area to enlighten the children there with precious knowledge and their spirit of utter devotion. GDUFSers regard it as an obligation to extend a hand for the ones in need and undertake the social responsibilities on their own accord.

Over the years, colorful extra-curricular activities have kept thriving, and a vibrant campus culture of diversity and flexibility has been nurtured at GDUFS in the meantime. These economic entities, along with social groups, never ceased to perfect the system individually and collectively, hence the authentic integration of learning and self-improvement have finally become reality.
