There exists a mysterious but not concealed organisation at GDUFS.Many people may have seen its members feeding cats and playing with those lovely creatures,et they still don't know its name. With the aim of helping our readers gain more understanding of the Shan Jiaomiao Organisation and sense GDUFSers’responsibility and shining voluntary spirits, I interviewed the head of its Practice Department.
As a department concentrating on practical work, it is the department that has direct contact with cats most frequently. They are in charge of matters such as sterilisation, feeding cats, taking injured animals to veterinary hospitals, adoption, dealing with conflicts between students and these small creatures, and so on.There is no doubt that regular feeding is the guts among all these energy-consuming tasks.Everyafternoon, several stewards and members of the club feed cats on campus, according tothe schedule that is made every week to arrange who doesthe feeding. When asked whether it is dangerous to catch a rutting or injured cat to take them to veterinary hospitals, she explained the process to me and told me that it can be divided into two situations. One situation is that if the cat is not afraid of people and has an intimate relationship with them, then the work is easy to be done, but if the cat is stoutly suspicious of people, things would get worse and dangerous. She said,"Anyhow, you just need to know it is a complicated and delicate process. And that's why we need to sterilize cats".
As soon as the question about“your most impressive moment or experience when you are in contact with cats”was cast to her, she was lost in thought for a while, after which she shared a moving experience on helping an injured cat with me.What impressed her most is that, some time ago,a female cat active in the area of the 12th students' building was sick and didn't have meals for several days, which worried them a lot. This was because its stomach was abnormally big but the problem was that she had been sterilised. Thus, they took her to the veterinary hospital."I remembered she was sensitive and afraid of people getting close to her at one time. However, on that afternoon when we got close to her to catch her,she didn't even have the strength to struggle like before, and a senior schoolmate held her in her armstightly. On our arrival, we went straight to the vet. After a thorough examination, the vet told us the bad and sad news that there were ascites in her tummy, which means problemswith herimmunesystem, and there was little time left for her.During the examination, the vet asked us to press on her four legs to avoid her moving about and I happened to be the one who dealt with the front leg, so I could see her big watery eyes staring at me with emotions that are difficult to know, so I was very very touched and impressed by that scene.Since time was limited for her, we thought it would be better to bring her back to the campus that she was familiar with and attached to.Animals certainlyhavethe instinct that they are going to die, so she went away silently and Inever saw her again,"said the leader.I could see a glint of sorrow and sadness flash through her eyes.At this point, I tried to console her by telling her that life moves on,and it is already great for the volunteers to do so many things and go so far to take care of them. She replied that doing the best they can is always said by the head of the association too.
Also, she told me that she initially joined the association for a simple reason that she is profoundly fond of cats,as well as hoping to do her bit for these lovable small creatures. For her, it is a great thing that brings a sense of achievement when she seesa tiny creature lying next to her and trusting her due to the fact that tiny things soften you by touching the deepest part of your heart. She said she has grown a lot through these valuable voluntary experiences of helping cats at GDUFS,which has enabled her to become a more confident, considerate and a person who is betterat communicating with others and has a good knowledge of animal care.
In the end, she appealed to all our students to cooperate with them and make joint efforts in protecting the living creatures on our campus, which are sure to add more coloursto our sometimes dull everyday lives.Last but not least, more subscribers of their WeChatofficial account are warmly welcomed.
