Congress of the 32nd Teachers' Day and Commendation

On September 8th, a congress was held in Yunshan Auditorium, in celebration of the 32nd Teachers’ Day, as well as in recognition of the advanced organizations and individuals who have made great contributions over the year. The congress was emceed by Vice President YANG Aimin; Party Secretary SUI Guangjun and President ZHONG Weihe, who respectively delivered speeches to send their greetings and appreciation to the teachers, and also their expectations of the future. The whole auditorium came into life in no time with all the university staff gathering inside.

Firstly, Secretary SUI summarized the accomplishments GDUFS has made in the previous year, concerning Party construction, genius cultivation, teaching quality development, scientific works, and so on. Then he specifically pointed out two students, FENG Shanshan and LIN Xiyu, who performed a well in the Rio Olympics, bringing great honour to GDUFS. But SUI didn’t overlook the challenges GDUFS is confronted with. To better solve the problems, he said that three points should be emphasized:

First of all, ingenuity and morality, which requires us to work like craftsmen and act as moral models. Second, beginner’s mind and innovation, which means we should keep up the passion possessed at the very beginning, but have the initiative to start something new. Third, reform and bravery, reminding us of the courage to break up the old-fashioned rules, no matter what a hard job it will be.

During the report, ZHONG Weihe summarised the works of GDUFS in the past year from five aspects, and in the mean time expressed his acknowledgement to a group of advanced individuals and organizations. First, the reform of education is continuing and the overall quality of geniuses is elevating. Second, the arrangement of resources is enhancing. Third, teaching quality has also been enhanced and the scientific force is strengthening. Third, international characteristics are more typical as international cooperation and communication is flourishing. Fifth, quality of management service is intensifying. ZHONG’s report was indeed inspiring.

Then came the procedures of commending outstanding individuals and teams.

The honorable Teacher’s Day was first established in 1985 in China. Considering not all countries have this festival, we have interviewed two foreign teachers about their feelings about this congress and the festival in China via this occasion. Richard Johnson, an American teacher, has spent 24 years in China. Richard has got the prize of model foreign teacher, which is the first time for him. “I also won the prize of outstanding teacher before,” he said proudly. When asked if there is a festival for teachers in America, he said no, but it is indeed an honorable festival for human beings. We feel happy for Richard’s achievements in education.

Dawid, a young Poland teacher, who has only two years’ experience at GDUFS, expressed his excitement at the very beginning. “This occasion is great. Our country also has a similar festival for teachers and I think it is good. But this year I didn’t get a prize,” he laughed. When asked if he had the aspiration to get a prize next year, his answer was a definite yes. “If the prize means making contributions to our university, then I’ll be really happy to get an award next year.”

When the congress was over, President ZHONG generously spared a few minutes receiving our interview. He said, “All of our colleagues are first-class; that’s why our university is first-class. Our university has been providing world-class resources to our colleagues to make them work better and happier. And in the meantime, we have been trying to provide more awards to encourage those who have the ability and aspiration to get one.”
