On the afternoon of 31st March, the report on the results of social practice, themed “Honing real skills and acquiring true knowledge by practice”, was held in the auditorium of the library. The purpose of this was to summarize the social practice in 2015 and share the results at the same time. Representatives from eight excellent teams shared the social activities they had practiced in the last year, demonstrating the volunteering spirit of “devotion, professionality, tolerance, fraternity, tenacity and initiative.”

The demonstration by Zhou Ying Voluntary Teaching Organization

CHEN Xuening, the leader of Sunday English School, introduced three brand activities. In the spirit of “being different, being colorful”, they employed diversified teaching models, dedicated to branding volunteer service, innovating teaching models, and benefiting the society with what they have learnt. As a result, they have become the pioneers of English Voluntary Teaching. “Dream makers”, a service team from Three Rural Areas Project (a program under which officials, doctors, scientists and college students go to the countryside to spread scientific and literacy knowledge and offer medical service to farmers), went to ShaoGuan and LeChang (two cities in Guangdong) for voluntary teaching, law popularization, and investigation & surveys. PENG Xiaofei, a participator, said: “it was a great success for us to plant the seed of law in the heart of children”. CAI Dongkai, who participated the training camp of CCB named “Youth Pre-employment Training Programme”, shared what he had experienced and what he had learnt in the camp. During the internship, he truly understood the importance of practice.

The 17th Voluntary teaching team of graduate students briefing their work

A voluntary teaching team of graduate students, affiliated to the 17th Chinese Young Volunteer for Poverty Alleviation Tandem Project, was the very first team composed of graduate students from our university. It is a milestone in the social practice of GDUFS. SHENG Xue, HU Huadao and YANG Rou – the 2015 graduates – went a long way to the Southwest Prefecture of Guizhou province to teach voluntarily for a year in Zhen Feng Middle School. They had brought great vitality to local English education, and were acclaimed by the principal and teachers of that school. Museum Bilingual Interpretation Group from SEIB provided services for 11 historic preservation units, from which their professional proficiency was improved and society serving function of higher education was enhanced. “Warmth Spreading” volunteer team, from “Dream” Youth Volunteers Association of Business School, paid close attention to the physical and psychological health as well as economic conditions of the old people who suffer from leprosy. They also visited old people who were being rehabilitated in Qingyuan Village (suffused with leprosy patients) and brought warmth and solace to them.

HU Yuping shared her voluntary experience in the west area

In 2015, GDUFS selected seven fresh graduate students and sent them to Tibet, Sinkiang and Qinghai to participate the Western Project of Volunteering Work for College Students. HU shared her feelings with us: “Going to a place far and new, we experienced different things which made our trivial lives poetic”. By the end of 2015, 39 volunteers from GDUFS have provided volunteer service in nearly 20 provinces such as Nyingchi and Tibet. It is reported that GDUFS has organized 3000 students to carry out volunteer work in international competitions and conferences, such as the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), and the 17th Annual Meeting of China Association for Science and Technology. With proficient language skills, volunteers undertook many important tasks, such as interpretation and reception.

This seminar was hosted by the social practice leading group of GDUFS, and organized by the Communist Youth League of the university. People in charge of the League, deputy secretaries of different schools, the Secretary of the Youth League Committee, as well as student representatives, all participated the seminar. WEI, a participator, said: “we’ve learnt a lot from today’s activity; I realized that the social practice in our university has a truly high standard. We can not only hone our skills in the process of volunteer work, if lucky enough, we can also get a job offer. What’s more, it can also encourage ourselves to enrich our university life and achieve self-improvement through practice”.
