The 3rd National Business English Practice Contest held successfully at GDUFS

On the November 27th, the 3rd National Business English Practice Contest was held successfully on the north campus at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

 

Under both the auspice of the ELT Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, and China Association of International Business English under the China Association of International Trade, the contest was hosted by GDUFS. Four teams from different divisions around China fought for the honor of the national champion. They were UFO from Sichuan International Studies University; Pioneers from Guangdong University of Finance and Economics,; Super 7+1 from Hunan University and the host team-Focus from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. The theme this year was “lead the change”, aimed at giving the university students an opportunity to focus on the innovative development of the corporations and improving the communication between the universities and corporations. Policy research manager of Australian Consulate-General in Guangzhou, Mr. Warwick Clark; Professor of foreign language studies from Shanghai Maritime University, WENG Fengxiang; senior manager of Chartered Institute of Management Accountants in Huanan zone, Kevin Chen were invited to be the judges of the final contest.

Vice President-FANG Fanquan gave an opening speech. He hoped students could throw themselves into the business practice and improve their ability of professional business analysis and English communication skills through this meaningful contest, -better adapting to the trend of economic globalization. He also explained the practical meaning of the topic: Lead the Change. Since now, China has stepped into the “New Normal” stage, and so the corporations not only need reform and innovation, but also think about how to lead the market and enhance core competitive ability themselves.

 

UFO, the first to do the presentation, chose the world of English, a famous print media in the field of English translation, as their object. They used the traditional Chinese military strategies to analyze the internal and external reasons of the sales fall. Their proposals covered many specific points of the products, management and promotion. They also suggested a transfer from print media to the new media.

Pioneers paid their attention to the offline promotion of Decathlon: a famous sports brand. After analyzing the market potential and the fierce competition in China, they advised to establish stores inside communities to shorten the distance with their target customers by completing the indoor sports experiences and organizing various sports activities

Super 7+1 focused on the “flash marriage” between Alibaba and Suning in August. After the thorough research, they dug the special meaning of this cooperation and suggested an expansion to the rural areas by the “offline club.” Their relaxing and vivid dialogue caught everybody’s eyes and won big applause.

Focus was last to present. They raised a specific service: daily insurance purchase plan for the VIPs of the China Pacific Insurance Company. This creative idea was intimate and economical for car-owners, and feasible to accomplish. The team members’ confidence and good presenting skills got unanimous praise of the audience

After the presentation section, professional judges commented on the performance of the four excellent teams, in terms of doing business as well as the stage manners. All the judges highly praised the contestants for their meticulous thoughts and sharp insight of the business world, and expressed their expectations of hearing more from Business major university students.

The most exciting moment finally came! Hosts announced the final results of the contest: Hunan University got the special prize; the first prize went to Guangdong University of foreign Studies. The second prize went to Sichuan International Studies University and Guangdong University of Finance and Economics. Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, Central University of Finance and Economic, Xi’an Fan Yi University as well as Northeast Normal University got the third prize
