Three Famous Scholars were Employed as “Yunshan Scholars” of GDUFS

On the morning of 30th October, the employment ceremony of three Yunshan scholars: Luo XuanMin, Leading Scholar of Yunshan; Professor Antony John Kunnan and Song Rou, Lecture Professor of Yunshan, was held on the north campus. President ZHONG WeiHe; Vice President YANG Aimin; Director of Human Resources Division, XIE WenXin; Executive Deputy Director of Collaborative Innovation Center for Language Research and Services, LI RuiLin; Vice Director, GE ShiLi; Executive Deputy Director of National Key Research Center for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, XU Hai; Deputy director of Academic Research Division, CHEN Ping, and others attended the ceremony hosted by YANG AiMin.

During the ceremony, ZHONG WeiHe awarded the letter of appointment to Luo XuanMin, Antony John Kunnan and Song Rou separately, and it was the first time for  the Linguistics of GDUFS to employ them all. Therefore, so far, GDUFS has employed 62 Yunshan Scholars in total. What’s more, 53 of them are still at work.

ZHONG WeiHe expressed sincere thanks and a warm welcome to the three Chinese and foreign scholars for joining our school for the upcoming 50th anniversary of GDUFS. He said, “The three scholars are the leaders of their own fields with significant academic voices and abundant academic resources. Not only would their joining GDUFS bring international advanced thoughts and methods of research to the relevant subjects, but also would bring innovative academic spirit to GDUFS, which may enable the construction of a research team to develop effectively and enhance the academic power of GDUFS. In addition, it would improve the academic influence of GDUFS in relevant fields of study.”

The scholars believed that GDUFS is an excellent place for working and studying because the academic atmosphere of GDUFS is strong and the campus environment is beautiful. Moreover, the services of relevant functional departments made them feel warm and comfortable. Hence, they will spare no effort to make full use of their own resources and knowledge to promote the establishment of subjects and improve academic levels. In the meeting, Professor LUO presented several famous books which were translated and edited mainly by him to the university. Then, secondary units and functional departments made a statement successively to show their determination that they would try their utmost to create comfortable scientific and life conditions for scholars.

Professor Luo XuanMin used to be doctoral supervisor and one of the first second-grade professors of Tsinghua University, who enjoyed special allowance given by the State Council. He successively acted as president of the Executive Council of Asian-Pacific Forum on Translation And Intercultural Studies, chairman of China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, member of China Writers Association, foreign committee member of Australian Research Council(ARC)，committee member of Department of Humanities of(Hong Kong) University Grants Committee (UGC) etc. What’s more, he is the chief editor or editorial board member of domestic and international core journals like Asia Pacific Translation and Intercultural Studies, Journal of Translation, Chinese Translators Journal and Foreign Languages in China. In recent years, he was responsible for a number of projects supported by National Social Science Foundation and acquired several research grants and scholarships. It is particularly worth mentioning that he was invited to deliver academic speeches in more than 30 world-renowned colleges and universities such as Oxford University, Yale University and University of Tokyo. In addition, he has published about 20 academic books, 10 translated books and over 100 academic papers on domestic and international vital journals. Overall, his academic achievements are remarkable and he enjoys high reputation in the realm of translation.

Professor Antony John Kunnan, the chief editor and editorial board member of several SSCI periodicals and international series, has published many high-quality academic works. He is a famous expert of international language assessment. He successively acted as doctoral supervisor of University of California, Los Angeles, University of Hong Kong and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Moreover, he used to be the chairman of International Language Testing Association and president of Association of Language Testers in Asia. Professor Kunnan is one of the founders of advocating different avenues of research in the field of language test, enjoying high reputation.

Professor Song Rou is professor and doctoral supervisor of Beijing Language and Culture University now, enjoying special allowance given by the State Council. In 2006, he was awarded prominent teacher of Beijing. The main direction of his research is the application of artificial intelligence language and words. He successively acted as director of Chinese Information Processing Society and committee member of Technical Committee of Computer Federation. He used to be senior visiting scholar of University of Illinois, visiting professor of City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, professional academic counselor of computational linguistics of China language and Literature Department of Tsinghua University and visiting researcher of Microsoft Research China. He achieved great accomplishment in the field of design and realization of artificial intelligence language. In addition, Professor Song was responsible for many projects of The National Natural Science Foundation of China, publishing 100 approximately articles and obtaining 2 patents.
