In the past few days, the competition results of the National Universities Foreign Language Micro-Teaching Competition revealed that LV Linqiong, a teacher from the GDUFS School of English and Education, won the second prize, together with SU Chun and LIANG Lijuan as winners of the third prize.

Among the many universities from Guangdong Province participating in the competition, GDUFS was the institute ranking first with the most awards and the highest levels of honors. As a consequence, GDUFS was awarded the honor of outstanding institute by the committee. The excellent performance fully reflected GDUFS’s leading positon in the new round of foreign language digital teaching reforms.

Micro-teaching lessons are focusing on certain knowledge points and are videotaped and edited into short videos. They are for individual review and highly valued as worth spreading widely, demanding each teacher’s innovative approach and a high-level of talent in  summarizing the content. Held by the China Association of Higher Education and Higher Education Press, the competition aimed to explore new concepts and new patterns of foreign language teaching, and to promote the application of digital teaching methods.

The work of LV Linqiong, 3W Problems of Media Quality: a Study of the Tiger Mother, was distinguished from others, which were limited only to the explanation of a certain knowledge point. She conveyed a critically valuable idea, through the practical application of the thoughts of critical media on 3W problems. Her idea showed the global horizon as well as the multiple, flexible, and well-designed study features of GDUFS.

Her piece of work is filled with critical thinking and reflects realistic approaches to modern life. It reveals the significance of respecting the differences between different cultures by thoroughly and justly analyzing an American reality show, called the Tiger Mother. The lesson began with a critical analytical perspective, along with a new teaching method, using the dialogues between Chinese teachers and foreign teachers. It had no elaborate or complicated approach designated but its profound insights, original innovations, logical ideas and natural style distinguished the work and grabbed the attention of the judges and eventually won the grand prize.

Last October, informed of the results of the competition, several leaders of GDUFS, such as DONG Jinwei, the Dean of School of English and Education, paid great attention to preparing the competition and to leading a core of 12 teachers to the Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University to participate in the opening ceremony. They discussed the meaning and features of micro-teaching and studied how to design a micro-teaching lesson. When they came back to GDUFS, a consultant team led by KANG Yeqin, a researcher in the field of MOOC … as well as a post-doctoral fellow of Tsinghua University, was established. As for producing the videos, the areas of the Academic Affairs Office and the Technical Education Center spared no effort to support the work. With the great effort of the related departments and participating teachers, nine teachers from the School entered the semi-finals of the competition. Later, LV Linqiong, SU Chun and LIANG Lijuan from GDUFS participated in the final of phase of the National Universities Foreign Language Micro-teaching Competition on behalf of Guangdong Province. Their works were examined and inspected in a very strict manner by language specialists from over 500 universities and more than 40 members of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and, eventually, they were recognized for excellent results.
