Have you ever imagined that you don’t completely own your body and you’re only borrowing it for one day instead? Have you ever imagined waking up in a different body every day? You might find this a little ridiculous, but this is what A’s life is.

A is a sixteen-year-old who wakes up in a different body every day since he/she was born. A has the ability to access the person’s memory and learn about the person’s life. But the power is gone once the clock strikes twelve. Eventually A learns to live in peace with the weird way of living. His/ Her philosophy of getting along with the new bodies is a) Never get too attached; b) Avoid being noticed; c) Do not interfere. It works perfectly fine until one day A wakes up as Justin and inevitably falls in love with his girlfriend– Rhiannon. Rules by which A has been living no longer apply. The balance has been broken. A starts to question life and struggles to make this relationship work.

The novel Every Day by David Levithan

The above is the novel Every Day by David Levithan. The book is not like some sort of emotional roller coaster that makes you burst into tears in the midst of reading. The feelings don’t hit you like a storm, but they keep haunting you with vague sadness. Back to the day when I first found the book, I was completely blown away by the creative concept – every day a different body; every day a different life; every day in love with the same person. Every writer tries to put obstacles in the path of love. But this time, the obstacle is set smartly beyond our imagination and thus keeping the book from falling into the simple cliché. Waking up in a different body is not as interesting as you imagine. On the contrary, the every-day-discovering something-new situation can be a fatal factor when it comes to maintaining a relationship. It’s a beautiful torture to see how A tries to make the relationship work and always sticks to Rhiannon however hard everything is.

If you are to read this book, we suggest you to be as open-minded as you can and try to embrace A’s life as much as A does. Try to forget about the outside and focus on the inside because this is the only way to let you absorb the ideas that the writer tries to deliver through the book. And there’s another piece of good news – the book has been adapted into a movie and will be on very soon!
