Disciplinary Literacy: Beyond EAP and ESP

Recent scholarship on literacy instruction in academic disciplines calls for a shift from teaching basic skills and generic strategies to teaching discipline-specific literacy practices. This shift augurs a need for understanding the specialized routines, skills, strategies, language, practices, and habits of mind inherent in a discipline. This talk presents findings from a study that examines the social, cognitive, and semiotic practices of a mathematician and discusses the implications of these findings for English curriculum and pedagogy in higher education.
