The opening ceremony of the Alliance Francaise de Canton's extension was held at the Guangdong Materials High-rise on April 16. Xu Zhenhua, President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS), held a speech at the ceremony.

Daniel Blaize, General Consul of the French Consulate in Guangzhou, said that the Alliance Francaise de Canton was a cooperative education program between GDUFS and the Alliance Francaise. The Department of Education of Guangdong Province approved the program in 1999.

The Alliance Francaise was set up in Paris in 1883. It has 29 branch schools in France and 1070 branches in 131 countries all over the world. Its goal is to disseminate French language and culture. In 2002, over 376,000 students worldwide received training from the Alliance Francaise.
